** Recent update: 10 Apr 2021
Disclaimer: My original post was written at the beginning of the Covid period (Mar 2020) while they still accept walk-in application.
With the current Covid-situation, there have been multiple changes in procedure. All the recent information are given by the readers who also share their latest experience in the comments below. So please check the latest comments below (both facebook and direct comments), in case they change the procedure again (change faster than flipping roti prata).
Big thank you to my fellow Malaysians who shared their experiences. I've been there, I totally understand your frustration! Let's help each other to make it easier for everyone.
I really hope this post helps you or at least save you some time.
Let me sum-up a few tips that will hopefully help Malaysians who wish to renew their passport in Singapore, especially during this Covid period.
How To Renew Malaysian Passport In Singapore (During the Covid period?)
- Apply online (as of Mar 2021, walk-in at the High Comm is NOT possible anymore, they strictly need you to have an appointment letter)
- Email them to get an appointment
- Collect passport
Step 1: Apply Online
Click here to apply online: https://eservices.imi.gov.my/myimms/myPassport?lang=en
Common problem: Photo couldn't get uploaded, payment page doesn't work.
Solution: TRY OTHER BROWSERS! I was told by my friend and a few comments below that Safari works ! so if you have problem uploading pictures/ payment, just try using Safari browser on your laptop (yes you can install safari on your non-macbook too).
If still cannot, try to use other browsers like
- Internet browser on old Samsung phone (somebody succeeded)
- Internet Explorer
- Microsoft Edge on Android devises (somebody succeeded)
- Google Chrome (my friend Cheryl tried and it worked)
Comment below if you were successful and let us know what browser you used.
If you have any issue uploading photo/ payment online, just take a screenshot at the error page, and send an email to them (see step 2). – Of course before doing that, try using other browsers first, Safari has worked for some apparently.
General feedback
Photo issues and how to solve them:
- get your photo professionally done in the local photoshop (such as FujiFilm Jurong Point $16 for soft copy) and ask for a soft copy ( of course follow the usual advice like hair tucked back behind ears, no hair in front of forehead etc)
- use an app like "Passport Photo Editor" then try upload again
- or another app: www.idphotodiy.com, full link click here.
- or another app: https://visafoto.com/
- resize the photo to 45mm X 32mm
- or some said can click on the "Hijab" button and it works for them
Payment issue:
- try using another browser (safari, google chrome, Samsung browsers work so far).
- use Malaysia Maybank Account (don't have a Malaysian bank account anymore? ask your friends in Malaysia to help).
If still have issues, just click on this link (google form from Malaysian High Comm FB page) and fill in accordingly. You should get a faster reply.
Step 2: Get An Appointment
Let's say you are the lucky one who gets step 1 all working properly, send an email to: singapore@imi.gov.my and request an appointment. You need to include your personal details and attach a receipt screenshot that you did online earlier on.
Oh, by the way if you receive an automatic email that tells you to go collect your passport on the same day or 2nd day to collect your new passport, DON'T TRUST THEM! (they are not so efficient 😳).
sample email could be as below:
Email Title: Request for appointment: Passport Renewal (<your name>)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I'd like to request for an appointment date to renew my Malaysian passport.
My personal details:
- Name: xxx
- Malaysian IC: xxx
- Old Passport Number: xx
- Work permit/ PR/ number: xxx
< Attachment: a copy of your payment receipt online>
Best regards, Your Name xx
(updated Oct 2020).

Step 4: Appointment day
Congratulations, you have come this far! What you have to bring:
All your documents
- old passport,
- Malaysian IC,
- Singapore Work Permit/ PR.. etc
- printed appointment email,
- printed payment receipt
- an ID to exchange pass at the gate (can be Passion Card, NTUC Card, driving license etc)
Other survival kit (optional)
- water ( I waited for so long standing under the hot weather I almost fainted),
- a fully charged phone battery (as you don't know how long the queue is going to be),
- a paper/electric fan (as you might have to wait outside and you know how hot Malaysian High Comm in Singapore is)
- Umbrella (queuing under the hot sun for 2 hours? if you don't need it you can borrow to the old lady queuing behind you)
- patience
- something to entertain yourself – a book/ your headphones to watch a show/ something to distract yourself from the waiting game.
When you arrive outside the gate, you need to scan 2x QR code (1 for health declaration, 1 for Safe Entry). I saw some older folks who don't know how to use QR code scan, there are paper forms provided outside if that's the case. If you've already scanned the QR Code, you don't need to fill in the paper forms anymore!
Hey please, Malaysians we should help each other, if you see an old uncle/auntie who seems lost, and you read my post you know what to expect, at least offer the elderly some help to scan the QR code in their phones / fill up the forms etc. You never know your small gesture might help them big time!

Original post (Mar 2020 – before Covid restriction)
Passport Renewal in Singapore
So it's time to renew my Malaysian passport for another 5 years.
I thought to write this post to share my experience and hope to make my fellow Malaysians who want to renew their Malaysian passport in Singapore easier.
So I googled a few ways to do it. If you are staying in Singapore and holding a Malaysian passport, you can
- Renew the passport in Malaysia (for example if you do it in JB, will be able to collect on the same day)
- Renew the Malaysian passport online (Sounds easy. Fill in all the blanks and upload your own photo. I tried, after more than 10 attempts, the photo just won't get approved, so I gave up). If you want to try your luck, the link to online renewal is here .
- Renew Malaysian passport in Singapore – so that seems like the easiest option for me. So keep reading.
Where to renew Malaysian Passport in Singapore?
High Commission of Malaysia
- 301 Jervois Rd, Singapore 249077
- Monday to Friday
- 8am-12pm for submission (Except Friday until 11.30am).
How to get there?
- Grab a taxi or just get to the nearest bus stop and walk over.
- No carpark nearby, if you absolutely need to drive, you can try to park at Loft @ Nathan Condominium (yes it's a paid carpark for public). 550m / 7 min walk to the embassy.
Step 1
So I went there on a Tuesday morning at around 11am, you need to bring a photo ID (can be driver license, student ID etc) to exchange pass at the gate.
Go straight to Counter 10 and get a passport application form. Fill it up.
Documents you need to renew Malaysian passport
- Malaysian IC + 1 photocopy
- Singapore NRIC /work pass + 1 photocopy
- Malaysian passport (the one to be renewed) + no need photocopy
- No need hard copy photo anymore! (as of Mar 2020) , yeap, I took a silly photo at the photo booth for $8, then to find out there's no need to submit photo anymore.
Submission
Basically you can get all the documents above ready at home, just get the application form from Counter 10 and fill them up in 5 minutes, then go back to Counter 10.
Then you shall get a waiting number, to submit everything at Counter 3, the officer will take a digital photo of you (That will be your passport photo, make sure you wear dark colour clothing, or they will borrow you a dark jacket to cover up).
After Counter 3, just go straight to Counter 4 for payment. I paid $66 SGD total in cash (as of March 2020). FYI if you renew in Malaysia is RM200.
Then I received a small paper slip and asked to come back for collection the next day.
So day 1, I went to the Embassy at 11am, left at 11.40am. Staff were efficient and friendly compared to what I used to remember back home. I was pleasantly surprised for the lack of frustration (if you know what I meant 😅). Too good to be true.
Experience was 8.5/10
Day 2 – Collection Of New Passport
The collection day, no need to bring anything, just the collection slip and a photo ID to be exchanged at the gate.
The collection slip stated 2.30pm to 4pm, by the time I arrived at 2.30pm sharp, it was already full of people. ( I guess they came in at 2pm). There was a long line of at least 40 people ahead of me.
Finally after 30 minutes in the line (yes physical queue with no number), I got the thumbprint scanned, checked the details of my new passport, signed my new passport on the spot. And all done!
Went in at 2.30pm, left at approximately 3.10pm, about 40 minutes to collect the passport. It was not too bad!
Hope my post helps you to save you a little time when you renew your passport next time in Singapore.

All the best!! Malaysia Boleh!😅
